The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.
